10 ways to take better photos of your kids
1. Get down low
You will see a real difference in your photos, once you start getting down to your kids level. This could mean going down to your knees, sitting down or squatting. You want to match their eye level. When photographing babies that are crawling or having tummy time, you will want to lay on the floor.
2. Don’t be afraid to get in close
Close ups of children are beautiful. They have the perfect skin, and beautiful big eyes. Make sure you focus on the eyes and fill the frame with just their face. Photograph them while they are playing to capture unexpected expressions.
3. Take many photos
Don’t just settle for one photograph. Keep snapping, and take several photos. Then pick the best.
4. Put yourself in the picture
Us parents forget to put ourselves in the picture with our kids. Put the camera on self timer, and let the camera take several photos of you together. Your kids will thank you, later in life.
5. Get some Action shots
Action shots are great. You don’t want photos of kids posing with a fake smile. So take photos as they play. You will need to be quick and ready for anything. But these action photos look great.
6. Lets dress up
Playing dress ups is fun for kids. We do dress ups and then have photos. It gives some variety to your pictures, and you can later have the pictures printed into a custom calendar.
7. Natural light is best
I love natural light. A cloudy day or in the shade is the best. Don’t use your flash unless you really have to.
8. Tell a story
Photography is a great way to tell stories. It could be just one photo, or a number of photos.
9. Don’t stop taking photos as they get older
We tend to take a lot of photos when our kids are babies, but then, very little as they get older. My older kids aren’t too keen on having photos, but I still get plenty. I take my camera almost everywhere.
10. Make it fun for them
I love taking photos of my kids when they are playing. They don’t have to look at you or pose, just let them do what they are doing. Playgrounds are great!
